Meta names Shengjia Zhao as chief scientist of AI superintelligence unit

Shengjia Zhao, who co-developed OpenAI’s GPT-4 and the o1 reasoning model, has been appointed Chief Scientist of Meta Superintelligence Labs. The announcement came Friday from Mark Zuckerberg, who noted Zhao’s leadership since the lab’s formation.

Zhao will help steer Meta’s work on high-level AI reasoning under Alexandr Wang’s oversight. MSL will also include several other researchers recruited from OpenAI in recent months.

Zhao’s team is preparing for the deployment of Prometheus, Meta’s largest-ever AI infrastructure project, which goes live in 2026 to support model training at massive scale.
