Amazon disputes report that it raised prices of popular items since Trump took office
Amazon is pushing back against claims in a Wall Street Journal article that linked price increases on its platform to new U.S. tariffs. The Journal said it tracked 2,500 products and found a 5% average price rise from January 20 to July 1.
In a rebuttal, Amazon accused the paper of selectively choosing data and not accounting for temporary discounts at the start of the year. It cited Dove deodorant and Yogi Tea as products whose price changes reflected the end of sales.
The retailer also noted that its pricing is highly variable, meaning conclusions based on fixed points in time may be inaccurate.
National data indicates broader cost pressures, with June consumer prices up 0.3% from May and 2.7% over the past year.
